Greeley at a Glance
Situated in Weld County, Colorado,
Greeley was originally organized and settled as a Utopian community by a newspaper
reporter from New York City. The
township was later named in honor of Horace Greeley, the editor of that same
newspaper. A location close to the convergence of the Cache la Poudre and South
Platte Rivers made Greeley one of the most important points in the late 1800s
for western immigration on the Overland Trail. Today the rivers provide an excellent
opportunity for scenic driving along Highway 14, between the towns of Fort
Collins and Walden,
as well as recreational activities, from fishing and camping to whitewater rafting.
Greeley’s rich cultural background inspires many events and festivals, such
as the second annual Greeley
Blues Festival and, for five days each spring in May, Cinco
de Mayo/Semana Latinaa Mexican festival that lures thousands of people
to Island
Grove Regional Park for fun, fare and song.
